We have four sinus cavities in our heads. A large amount of pain and pressure can be caused by inflammation or infection. Sinusitis is another way of saying sinus infection. Sinusitis is caused by a sinus cavity that is inflamed, is infected or is full of mucus. Symptoms of a sinus infection can be very similar to those of a cold. However, a sinus infection does not respond to medication that is typically prescribed for a cold. You can also have sinus problems due to allergies. People that live in areas that have a lot of dust tend to complain more of sinus problems.

Many people often experience a cold that will not go away even with medication. If that is the case you should see a doctor right away. If you have symptoms of allergies or a cold that just will not go away, it is likely that you have a sinus infection.

When you have a sinus infection, the mucous you have can't drain due to inflammation. With a cold the mucous drains into the nasal cavity. If mucous is trapped and unable to drain a bacterial infection can set in.

Sinus infections should be treated as soon as possible. Left untreated it could lead to suffering from chronic sinus infections and surgery that is not necessary.

Some of the other symptoms of a sinus infection may include swelling and redness in the nasal passage, pain and tenderness in the facial muscles, swelling in the eyes, headache, and the feeling of a toothache. Bending over will increase the pain and pressure of the headache and the toothache. A fever can accompany these symptoms as well. If you have two or more of these symptoms is a good indication that a sinus infection is occurring.

Symptoms of a sinus infection are usually easy to diagnose. There are physicians that will have a patient get a CT scan or an x-ray to have a definite diagnosis of a sinus infection.

There are many treatments that can help relieve symptoms such as, medication, nose drops and even breathing in steam. These are however, a temporary form of relief not a cure.
